NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health is a globally recognised health and safety qualification from an established independent examination board with over 25 years experience in providing up to date and relevant examinations.

The size of the global Health and Safety problem is considerable, with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimating 1.1 million deaths attributable every year to inadequate standards.

This course reflects the syllabus of the established and very popular NEBOSH General Certificate that is available in the UK. It creates a focus on management systems and best practice in the context of international standards in Health and Safety, rather than reliance on local legislation. By applying proven and recognised processes, it underpins consistent Health and Safety performance.

This course is aimed at managers, supervisors, worker representatives and others who require a knowledge and understanding of health and safety principles and practices. The Certificate provides a sound basis for evaluating risks and hazards in any country, in any business. The NEBOSH International General Certificate is also suitable for those embarking on a career in health and safety, providing a valuable foundation for further professional study.

The NEBOSH International General Certificate will benefit organisations operating outside the UK, and multinational companies working to international standards who are seeking to implement good health and safety management across all areas of their operation. Ensuring that line managers have a sound understanding of the principles of managing risk is a key building block of an effective safety culture.

This programme is designed to contain all the features of a standard classroom learning programme but is complemented by a series of interactive web activities, resources and assessments. Inside your eLearning environment you will be provided with a course timetable advising you which topics should be studied each week. There is flexibility built into this timetable in terms of when and where you study, but it is designed to ensure you are fully prepared for the final NEBOSH examination and assessment. Throughout your NEBOSH course you will be fully supported by our team of expert tutors, available when you need them.

Candidates are assessed by two written examinations and a practical assessment. The practical assessment checks your ability to put into practice the knowledge gained during the course. The first paper undertaken in the morning is entitled Paper A1 “Controlling workplace hazards” and the afternoon exam is Paper A2 “The Management of Health and Safety”. The practical examination is held on a separate day and involves the physical inspection of a workplace and is designed to test candidate’s ability to complete a health and safety assessment and produce a management style report on their findings.

There are no formal entry requirements although a written report (in English) is required as a part of the examination.

On successful completion of the examination NEBOSH International Certificate holders can now join the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as an Associate Member, using the designation AIIRSM. The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) have also announced that holders of this qualification can gain membership of IOSH at the new Technician Member grade subject to experience/application. Technician Members will be able to use the ‘TechIOSH’ letters after their names.

This course can lead to external certification of the student chooses – i.e. the student must taken an external exam at an accredited centre (Please Note: an independent charge may be levied by the chosen test centre).

The NEBOSH International General Certificate covers a range of workplace hazards and methods of control.
